New Sculpture for the Three Springs Police Station is Chosen

Durango, CO –  The City of Durango is proud to announce the selection of a sculpture by local artist Preston Parrott for the Three Springs police station.  Parrott is a primarily self-taught metal sculptor who lives in Durango.  His piece, currently untitled, was designed as a community marker, a navigational point within the Three Springs community, and a symbolic reminder of the community’s interdependence with our public services.  The piece will measure approximately 12 feet at the highest point and is composed of four curved sides made of patinated steel.  The core of the piece is made of copper-plated perforated metal – allowing one to see through the center, as well as allowing air flow.  The piece resembles a flame in its outer structure, reminding one of an “eternal flame” – the constant support the police department provides.  The entire structure will be mounted on a six-foot circular concrete base in front of the substation.

“I’m moved and honored that the selection committee has chosen this piece for such a prominent location,” commented Parrot.  “I truly appreciate the committee’s trust to create a symbolic and contemporary sculpture which is designed to be a representation of the interdependence of community and public services.”

A selection committee, made up of six representatives from the City’s Public Art Commission, a professional artist, a representative from the Durango Police Department, and a community member, unanimously chose Parrott’s proposal. The new sculpture will be installed summer of 2009 and will become part of the City’s public art collection.
